The National Institutes of Health (NIH), located in Bethesda, MD, conduct extensive, cutting-edge medical research. Volunteers are typically paid for participating in NIH studies. Most studies utilize two types of participants: people who have the problem that is under investigation (e.g., diabetes, depression) [such persons are called "patients" on the linked patient recruitment page] people who do not have the problem that is under investigation, and who therefore serve as a comparison group [such persons are called "healthy volunteers" on the linked patient recruitment page]

Thus, any person may be able to participate in an NIH study and new participants are always needed. In fact, travel and accomodations may be provided for people with rare conditions being studied who live outside of the DC area. For more information, click on one of the links below:
