Most studies utilize two types of participants:
  1. people who have the problem that is under investigation (e.g., diabetes, depression)
    [such persons are called "patients" on the linked patient recruitment page]
  2. people who do not have the problem that is under investigation, and who therefore serve as a comparison group
    [such persons are called "healthy volunteers" on the linked patient recruitment page]
